What the Somalia passport actually gets you
The Somalia passport opens 81 of the 198 destinations we track, which is 41% of them, and ranks 75 of 199 passports worldwide. Those 81 are the places you can book a flight to this week: visa-free, visa on arrival, an eTA, or an e-visa you fill in online. The other 117 want an application, an appointment and a decision before you go, and that is the difference between a trip you can plan and one you have to apply for.
It is not evenly distributed, and no passport's is. Africa is where this one is strongest, with 36 of 53 countries open. Europe is where it runs out, at 2 of 45. If your plans lean toward the second, the paperwork is the plan.
Getting in is not the same as being allowed to stay. The most common allowance is 90 days, granted by 4 of the destinations open to you. That ceiling is what makes a nomad visa worth the trouble: it is the difference between leaving every few months and living somewhere. It is also why a travel insurance policy that expires at 90 days quietly stops matching your life.
The number nobody looks up is the one pointing the other way. 2 of the 198 passports we track can enter Somalia without a visa. Mobility is not a property of a document, it is a relationship between two countries, and the gap between those two figures is usually more revealing than either on its own.
Wherever the Somalia passport takes you, it does not carry health cover with it. Entry rules and hospital bills are separate problems, and only one of them is settled at the border. Of the countries we have written up properly, Malaysia and Dominica are open to you without a visa. What cover you actually need abroad.
The fine print on where a Somalia passport reaches
Rules that apply to the destinations above, checked by hand against the issuing authority.
Where cover is a condition of entry
- Burkina Faso The e-visa application asks for a medical certificate and proof of health insurance.
- Iraq requires health insurance bought through a state platform as part of the visa process, around USD 158.
Where getting there is the problem
- Equatorial Guinea The land borders with Cameroon and Gabon have been closed indefinitely since December 2025. Entry is by air or sea only.
- Haiti No international airline currently serves Port-au-Prince. The only regular way in is Cap-Haïtien, and the land border with the Dominican Republic is closed.
Visa-free, but not paperwork-free
- Ghana The ETA is free but mandatory, and has to be applied for before you travel. Visa on arrival ended in May 2026.
- Mozambique Since late July 2026 you also need an ETA, filed at least 48 hours before departure.
- Seychelles Visa-free, but not paperwork-free: every traveller has to buy a Travel Authorisation before departure, from about EUR 10.
- Thailand The TDAC digital arrival card is mandatory for everyone, up to three days before arrival. It is free and is not a visa.
- Togo No visa, but you must file a travel declaration online at least 24 hours before you arrive.
Access that rides on another visa
- Antigua & Barbuda A valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa allows entry without arranging a visa first.
- Bahamas A valid visa or permanent residence from the US, UK, Canada or a Schengen country replaces the Bahamian visa.
- Dominica A valid Schengen, US, UK or Canadian visa gets you six months regardless of your nationality.
- Guyana A US green card, or a valid US, Canadian or Schengen visa, allows 90 days visa-free.
- São Tomé & Príncipe A valid Schengen or US visa gets you 15 days visa-free regardless of your nationality.

Visa rules can change at short notice and depend on your purpose of travel, length of stay and onward tickets. Always confirm with the destination’s embassy or the IATA Travel Centre before you book. Visa-free entry never includes travel health insurance. That’s still on you.
