Routes that depend on your nationality
Some of Italy’s long-stay routes are open only to citizens of specific countries. Here’s where a United Kingdom passport stands:
Working Holiday / Youth Mobility Visa
Not open to United Kingdom passport holders
Type D long-stay visa open only to citizens of Italy's bilateral working-holiday partner countries. Age 18-35 for Australia and Canada; age 18-30 for New Zealand, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. Validity 12 months; work generally capped (e.g. AU: max 6 of 12 months, max 3 months same employer). Canada allows up to two participations (24 months total). Japan agreement entered into force via Law 136/2025. Partner list verified complete across official Italian consulate / Australian Embassy Rome / Farnesina sources; quotas vary by country and are not consistently published.
Visa-free isn’t insurance-free
Whatever route you take into Italy, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.

Visa rules can change at short notice and depend on your purpose of travel, length of stay and onward tickets. Always confirm with the destination’s embassy or the IATA Travel Centre before you book. Visa-free entry never includes travel health insurance. That’s still on you.
