    Non-lucrative residence visa (retirement / no work)

    1 year, renewable in 2-year steps; permanent residence after 5 years

    Required— full private health cover, Spain-authorised, no co-payment
    Good for
    Self-sufficient non-EU nationals living in Spain without working
    Requirement
    Passive income ≈ 400% of IPREM (≈ €2,400/month) + €600/month per dependent

Routes that depend on your nationality

Some of Spain’s long-stay routes are open only to citizens of specific countries. Here’s where a United Kingdom passport stands:

  • Working Holiday / Youth Mobility Visa

    Not open to United Kingdom passport holders

    Bilateral youth-mobility program open ONLY to citizens of partner countries. Age 18-30 for Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea; up to 35 for Canada and Argentina. 12-month stay (work capped at ~6 months total, max 3 months per employer). Annual quotas where documented: Australia ~3,400, New Zealand ~2,000, Japan 500 (first-come), Argentina 500 (in force since 10 Feb 2023, BOE-A-2023-2097). Applicant must be a national resident in the partner country. These six partners are well-documented and verified via Spanish consulate pages and the BOE; a separate UK-Spain bilateral scheme was proposed but rejected and is NOT in force, so the UK is excluded.

Visa-free isn’t insurance-free

Whatever route you take into Spain, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.
