Routes that depend on your nationality
Some of Argentina’s long-stay routes are open only to citizens of specific countries. Here’s where a Ireland passport stands:
Work and Holiday Programme (Programa de Vacaciones y Trabajo)
You qualify — open to Ireland passport holders
12-month stay, open only to citizens of bilateral partner countries. Standard age 18-30 inclusive; Ireland age extended to 35. Annual quotas vary by country (e.g. Australia 1,500; France 1,000; New Zealand 1,000; Poland 400; Ireland/Japan/South Korea 200; Netherlands/Portugal 100; Denmark/Germany/Sweden unlimited). Norway and Japan confirmed via Argentine Cancilleria embassy pages. List drawn from the official Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs (cancilleria.gob.ar) Work & Holiday programme page; these are the well-documented partner countries as of June 2026.
MERCOSUR Temporary Residency (residencia temporaria por nacionalidad MERCOSUR)
Not open to Ireland passport holders
2-year temporary residency granted on the basis of nationality alone (no income test, no job offer or family tie required), under Law 25.871 / the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement. Open only to nationals of MERCOSUR member states (Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia) and associated states (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname). Convertible to permanent residency after 2 years. Eligible-nationality list cross-confirmed across two immigration-law sources.
Visa-free isn’t insurance-free
Whatever route you take into Argentina, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.
