Rules are written for non-GCC foreign nationals; Gulf Cooperation Council citizens (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE) enter visa-free without these procedures and are exempt from the visitor health-insurance requirement.

  Visa-Free Entry (Short Stay / Tourist)

  Two tiers by nationality: most Western passports get up to 90 days within a 180-day period (multiple entry, non-extendable); other nationalities (e.g. India, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Egypt) get 30 days, often extendable by a further 30 days. Verify your nationality's tier.

  Insurance

  Requiredunder Law No. 22 of 2021 (in force for visitors since 1 Feb 2023) non-GCC visitors must hold valid Qatar health insurance for the whole stay: either buy a policy from a Ministry of Public Health-registered insurer before arrival (approx QAR 50 for 30 days) or hold an international policy that covers Qatar for the entire stay. GCC nationals exempt. Airport enforcement can be inconsistent, but the legal requirement is firm.

  Tourists and short-stay visitors from 100+ eligible nationalities (incl. US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil) entering for leisure or to visit family.

  Requirement

  Eligible passport valid at least 3 months from arrival (6 months advised), confirmed return ticket and accommodation; some nationalities (e.g. India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand) must pre-book hotels via Discover Qatar.

  Hayya Tourist e-Visa (A1)

  30 days, single entry (extension possible; varies by nationality - verify).

  Insurance

  Requiredthe same visitor health-insurance rule applies; proof of Qatar-valid cover (MoPH-registered policy or qualifying international policy) is expected as part of the application.

  Good for

  Tourists from nationalities NOT eligible for visa-free entry, applying online before travel via the Hayya platform.

  Requirement

  Online Hayya application (hayya.qa) with passport, photo, return ticket and confirmed accommodation; fee approx QAR 100. Typical processing 48-72 hours.

  Business / Work-Visit Visa

  30-day single or multiple-entry (multiple-entry extendable by up to 60 days); separate multi-entry work-visit type valid 3 months, extendable up to 6 months (varies; verify).

  Insurance

  Requiredthe visitor health-insurance rule applies for the stay; Qatar-valid cover (MoPH-registered or qualifying international policy) should be held, especially for longer multi-entry stays.

  Good for

  Foreign professionals visiting for meetings, conferences, negotiations or short-term specialised work - does not permit ongoing local employment.

  Requirement

  Formal invitation/sponsorship letter from a Qatar-registered company on letterhead; passport valid 6 months, recent photo, accommodation proof and bank statements. Fees roughly QAR 200-1,000 depending on single vs multiple entry.

  Work (Employment) Residence Permit

  Tied to the employment contract; commonly issued for 1 to several years and renewable.

  Insurance

  Requiredunder Law No. 22 of 2021 the employer must provide basic health insurance from an approved Qatari insurer for the employee (and eligible dependants); valid insurance is a prerequisite for issuing/renewing the residence permit and the cost cannot be passed to the employee.

  Good for

  Foreign nationals with a confirmed job offer from a Qatar-registered employer who will sponsor them.

  Requirement

  Employer sponsorship (registered with MADLSA), Ministry of Interior entry/work visa converted on arrival into a Residence Permit with work endorsement (Qatar ID), plus mandatory medical exam (chest X-ray, blood tests).

• Study

  Student Visa / Residence Permit

  Duration of the study programme (renewable per enrolment); convert the entry visa to a residence permit (Qatar ID) within about 1-2 weeks of arrival.

  Insurance

  Requiredvalid health insurance is a prerequisite for the residence permit; institutions typically arrange or require approved cover (commonly with a minimum coverage level around QAR 150,000). Verify with the university.

  Good for

  Foreign nationals admitted to an accredited Qatari university or college, sponsored by the institution.

  Requirement

  Unconditional admission letter from an accredited institution, proof of funds for tuition and living costs (third-party sponsor allowed), medical examination certificate, and proof of accommodation.

• Digital nomad

  Mustaqel Independent / Talent Residence Permit (Self-Sponsorship)

  5-year renewable, self-sponsored residence permit (administered via Jusoor / Qatar Manpower Solutions, mustaqel portal).

  Insurance

  Requiredas a residence permit it falls under Qatar's mandatory health-insurance scheme; the holder must hold and maintain approved Qatar-valid cover.

  Good for

  Skilled independent professionals, freelancers and entrepreneurs who want to live and work in Qatar without a traditional employer sponsor - the closest available route for remote/independent workers (Qatar has NO dedicated digital-nomad visa).

  Requirement

  Talent track: endorsement from the relevant Qatari government authority in an approved field plus a job offer or minimum funds of approx QAR 36,500 (USD 10,000); fee approx QAR 4,000. Entrepreneur track: business plan endorsed by an authorised incubator (e.g. QSTP) with a minimum investment around QAR 250,000; fee approx QAR 5,000. Allows family sponsorship and bank-account access. Verify current terms.

• Residence

  Long-Term Residence Permit (Executive / Entrepreneur)

  Up to 10 years, renewable; non-sponsored residence status with family-sponsorship, domestic-worker sponsorship and asset-ownership rights.

  Insurance

  Requiredresidence-permit holders must carry valid Qatar health insurance under the mandatory scheme.

  Good for

  Senior executives at registered Qatari employers, and entrepreneurs nominated by recognised incubators - categories introduced in early February 2026 to attract top talent and founders.

  Requirement

  Executive: existing Qatar residency, nomination by a qualifying registered employer (QSE-listed company, licensed bank, regulated insurer or government-serving consultancy), 5+ years senior-executive experience and a minimum monthly salary of QAR 50,000 (approx USD 13,900) for Chairman/CEO/CFO/CTO/COO or QAR 80,000 (approx USD 22,300) for other executive directors. Entrepreneur: nomination/endorsement letter from a recognised incubator (Qatar Development Bank, QSTP, Start Up Qatar, etc.) and a minimum bank balance of approx USD 10,000 maintained over the last 3 months. Verify thresholds with MOI.

• Transit

  Transit Visa (96-hour Stopover)

  Up to 96 hours (4 days), non-extendable; minimum layover around 5 hours required.

  Insurance

  Recommendedtravel/health insurance is strongly advised for a stopover; a separate MoPH visitor policy is not normally required for a short transit, but cover that is valid in Qatar is prudent.

  Good for

  Qatar Airways passengers with a connecting flight through Hamad International Airport who want to leave the airport during a layover.

  Requirement

  Onward Qatar Airways ticket to a third country and a qualifying layover; free for Qatar Airways passengers (a QAR 100 fee applies if the visa is requested as part of a Discover Qatar stopover package). Passport valid 6 months.
