Visa types & longer-stay routes for Kuwait

Rules are written for non-GCC foreign nationals; GCC citizens enter visa-free with a national ID, GCC residents of any profession now get a visa on arrival, and many other nationalities must apply online or through a Kuwaiti sponsor. Since 23 December 2025, every foreign visitor and resident must also hold mandatory Kuwaiti health insurance.

    Tourist eVisa

    Up to 90 days from entry, single entry; extendable once for a further 90 days at the General Department of Residence (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Since 23 December 2025 no visit visa is issued without proof of valid Kuwaiti health insurance (flat ~KWD 5), and the cover must be from a Kuwait-approved provider — foreign/home-country travel policies are not accepted for the visa, though supplementary private travel-medical cover is still advisable.
    Good for
    Leisure travellers from eligible nationalities (e.g. US, UK, Canada, EU/Schschengen states) applying online before travel via the official MOI portal (evisa.moi.gov.kw).
    Requirement
    Valid passport (6+ months) and online application with passport bio-page; standardised visit-visa fee of KWD 10 per month of stay plus the mandatory KWD 5 health-insurance charge under the rules effective 23 Dec 2025.

    Visa on Arrival (GCC residents)

    Up to 90 days, issued on the spot at the port of entry.

    Insurance
    Required. As a visit-visa category it falls under the 23 Dec 2025 mandate requiring valid Kuwaiti health insurance (flat ~KWD 5) from an approved provider; private travel-medical cover is also advisable.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals of any profession holding a valid residence permit in another GCC country (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman); profession-based restrictions were abolished on 10 Aug 2025.
    Requirement
    Valid passport (6+ months) and a qualifying GCC residence permit with at least 6 months' validity remaining; visa granted at the port of entry after document check, subject to the standard visit-visa fee and mandatory insurance.

    Family Visit Visa

    Around 30 days; renewable in line with the visit-visa rules (up to 1 year total; verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Family visits fall under the 23 Dec 2025 visitor-insurance mandate — valid Kuwaiti health insurance (flat ~KWD 5) from an approved provider is required before the visa is issued; private medical cover is advisable.
    Good for
    Relatives visiting a family member who is a legal resident of Kuwait.
    Requirement
    Sponsorship by a Kuwaiti resident relative and valid passport (6+ months); standardised visit-visa fee of KWD 10 per month plus the mandatory KWD 5 health-insurance charge.

    Business Visit Visa

    Around 30 days; visit visas run in 3-month validity blocks and may be renewed up to a maximum of 1 year total (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Business visits are covered by the 23 Dec 2025 mandate — proof of valid Kuwaiti health insurance (flat ~KWD 5) from an approved provider is needed before the visa is issued; additional private medical cover is advisable.
    Good for
    Travellers attending meetings, conferences or short business activities for a Kuwaiti company.
    Requirement
    Invitation/sponsorship from a Kuwaiti company and valid passport (6+ months); standardised visit-visa fee of KWD 10 per month plus the mandatory KWD 5 health-insurance charge.

    Work Visa & Residency Permit (Iqama)

    Tied to the employment contract; standard private/public-sector residency is granted for up to 5 years and is renewable (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Residency cannot be issued or renewed without valid health insurance and the residency period may not exceed the insurance period (mandatory state Afya health plan, ~KWD 100/year; verify).
    Good for
    Foreign nationals employed by a Kuwaiti employer or government entity under the sponsorship (kafala) system; Kuwait has no dedicated digital-nomad or freelance visa, so paid/remote work generally requires this route.
    Requirement
    Job offer/contract from a Kuwait-based sponsor, valid passport (6+ months), in-country medical examination and home-country police clearance; employer pays ~KWD 150 per work permit and the iqama renewal fee is ~KWD 20/year. Typical age range ~21–60 with exceptions.
  • Study

    Student Visa / Residence

    Duration of the course; sponsor/institution-based and renewable (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. As a residency category it is subject to Kuwait's mandatory health-insurance rule (state Afya plan, ~KWD 100/year) for issuing and renewing residency, with residency capped at the insurance validity (verify exact amount).
    Good for
    International students accepted into a recognised Kuwaiti educational institution for full-time study.
    Requirement
    Letter of acceptance from a recognised institution, valid passport, completed MOFA/MOI application, and a recent health certificate plus lab tests (e.g. hepatitis B/C, TB chest X-ray).
  • Residence

    Dependent / Family Residence (Sponsored)

    Tied to the sponsor's residency; renewable (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Each dependent's residency cannot be issued or renewed without valid health insurance (state Afya plan, ~KWD 100/year per person), with residency duration capped at the insurance period.
    Good for
    Spouses and children of an expatriate resident who meets the income threshold to sponsor dependents.
    Requirement
    Sponsoring resident must earn at least ~KWD 800/month; annual dependent residency fee ~KWD 20 for a spouse or child and ~KWD 300 for other relatives such as parents; valid passports (verify).
  • Residence

    Long-Term Investor / Property Residency (10–15 years)

    Up to 10 years (property owners) or up to 15 years (licensed investors under Law 116/2013, per Cabinet Resolution 651/2026); renewable while the investment entity stays operational and compliant (verify).

    Insurance
    Required. Long-term residency remains subject to mandatory health insurance (state Afya plan, ~KWD 100/year); iqama renewal fees for investors and property owners are ~KWD 50/year (verify).
    Good for
    Foreign investors in licensed Kuwaiti business entities (up to 15 years via KDIPA), property-owning expatriates (up to 10 years), plus eligible executives/partners and their immediate families.
    Requirement
    For the investor route, a KDIPA-licensed entity meeting Kuwait's direct-investment thresholds (minimum investment ~KWD 5 million with at least ~KWD 1 million capital and a physical presence/Kuwaitisation compliance); clean criminal record and passport valid 6+ months. Verify exact thresholds.

    Transit Visa

    Up to 7 days; not extendable (verify).

    Insurance
    Requiredfor the visa. Transit visas are now covered by the mandatory ~KWD 5 health-insurance charge from an approved provider; additional private travel-medical cover is advisable.
    Good for
    Travellers passing through Kuwait between connecting flights who wish to leave the airport or whose layover exceeds 24 hours; GCC nationals are exempt.
    Requirement
    Onward travel documentation and valid passport (6+ months); obtainable online, at a Kuwaiti consulate or on arrival. Subject to the KWD 5 mandatory health-insurance charge introduced 23 Dec 2025.
