Rules are written for non-Ghanaian foreign nationals who require a visa or permit to enter or reside in Ghana; ECOWAS citizens enter visa-free and (from 25 May 2026) all African Union nationals get free online/visa-free entry, so the routes below mainly concern non-African travellers and longer-stay foreigners.

Business Visa
Tied to visa validity - single-entry approx 90 days; business stays often described as up to ~60 days. Multiple-entry options up to 1-2 years at consular discretion. Verify.

- Foreign nationals attending meetings, conferences, trade visits or commercial negotiations (not paid local employment).

Work & Residence Permit (Employment)
Issued for the duration of employment and renewable; GIPC automatic immigrant quota slots can be effectively indefinite while the company qualifies. Specific validity not published by GIS - verify. Residence permit needed for any stay over 180 days.

- RecommendedNot required as a permit condition in published GIS requirements - a medical report from the GIS Clinic is required (a health screening, not insurance). Health cover strongly recommended.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals taking up paid employment with a Ghana-registered company, or with NGOs/missionaries/GIPC or Free Zones-approved entities.
- Requirement
- Employer applies to GIS on the applicant's behalf; needs valid passport, professional/academic certificates, police clearance from home country, a medical report from the Ghana Immigration Clinic, employer/organisation registration documents (and GIPC/GFZB papers where relevant). Both a work permit and a residence permit are required.
- Study
Student Visa / Student Residence Permit
Granted for the length of the study programme (permit renewed as studies continue); exact validity per permit not published by GIS - verify.

- RecommendedNot required by GIS as published - no insurance mandate stated; recommended (some institutions may ask for cover separately - verify with the school).
- Good for
- Foreign nationals admitted to a recognised Ghanaian school, college or university.
- Requirement
- Admission letter and a covering letter from the school to the Comptroller-General, passport, photos, school fees receipts, a bond/guarantor or affidavit where applicable, and a Non-Citizen ID card. Foreign students residing 180+ days need the student residence permit.
- Residence
Dependant Residence Permit
Tied to the principal permit holder's residence permit; renewable. Specific validity not published - verify.

- RecommendedNot required as a published condition; recommended.
- Good for
- Spouses and dependants of foreign nationals who hold a valid work/residence permit in Ghana.
- Requirement
- Application linked to the principal permit holder, proof of relationship (e.g. marriage/birth certificates), passport, photos and a Non-Citizen ID card. Submitted to GIS.
- Residence
Indefinite Residence Status / Right of Abode (Permanent Residence)
Permanent / indefinite right to reside (Right of Abode also confers visa-free entry and the right to work without a permit). Verify current criteria.

- RecommendedNot required as a published condition - a GIS Clinic medical report is required (health screening, not insurance). Cover recommended.
- Good for
- Long-staying foreign nationals seeking to settle permanently in Ghana; foreign spouses of Ghanaian citizens; and (Right of Abode) persons of African descent in the diaspora or former Ghanaians who lost citizenship by acquiring another nationality.
- Requirement
- Indefinite Residence: typically a minimum of ~7 years lawful residence (per immigration-law sources), attestation by two qualifying Ghanaians, property/business evidence, police report and a GIS Clinic medical report. Right of Abode: ~7 years total residence with 2 years immediately preceding the application and lawful residence at the date of application. Verify thresholds with GIS.
- Transit
Transit Visa
Approx 48 hours; traveller must exit within the transit window. Verify.
- Insurance
- OptionalNot required - no insurance requirement stated for transit.
- Good for
- Travellers passing through Ghana en route to another country who will leave the airport / need to enter during a layover.
- Requirement
- Passport valid 6+ months with a blank page, onward ticket and visa/entry rights for the final destination. Must be obtained before arrival (not issued on arrival). ECOWAS nationals are exempt.

Whatever route you take into Ghana, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.
