Rules are written for foreign nationals generally; note that citizens of six neighbouring states (DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda) are visa-exempt and EAC nationals have their own free categories, so the routes below mainly concern travellers who do require a visa.

    Travellers who did not obtain an e-visa in advance and arrive at Bujumbura (Melchior Ndadaye) International Airport or a land border.
    Requirement
    Valid passport (6 months validity, one blank page), yellow-fever certificate; carry the exact fee in cash. Available at Bujumbura airport and, per the visa policy, land borders - confirm at your point of entry as this can change.

    1 month per entry, renewable up to twice; multiple-entry sold per month (1 month USD 90, 2 months USD 180, 3 months USD 270 per the visa policy)

    Work Permit (Class A investor / Class B employee)

    Class A valid while the investment remains active; Class B tied to the employment contract (renewable) - verify current terms

    RecommendedNo statutory insurance requirement found; the process requires a medical examination rather than insurance. Private health cover recommended. Verify with employer/authorities.
    Good for
    Class A: foreign investors establishing or operating a business in Burundi. Class B: foreign employees (professionals, technical staff, managers) working for a Burundian employer.
    Requirement
    Employer sponsorship is mandatory (no independent applications); medical examination with clean bill of health, home-country police clearance, and proof the role cannot be filled by a Burundian national. Processing roughly 4-6 weeks (third-party sourced). A new permit is needed if changing employers.
