- Nationals of roughly 120 visa-exempt countries (EU/EEA, US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Gulf states and others) visiting for tourism or short business.
- Requirement
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond intended stay; no visa needed for eligible nationalities. Foreigners must register their stay with local police, generally within ~48 hours of arrival (hotels do this automatically).

Short-stay visa (Type C)
Up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
- Insurance
- Required. Applicants must show travel/health insurance valid for the whole stay; sources cite minimum coverage around EUR 30,000 (approx, verify with the issuing mission).
- Good for
- Nationals of countries that are NOT visa-exempt, travelling for tourism, family visits or short business; cannot work or apply for residency on it.

- Application at a B&H embassy/consulate with passport (valid 3+ months beyond stay), photo, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, and documents showing purpose of stay.

Temporary residence permit – employment (work)
Granted for up to 1 year (work permits are usually job-specific and last up to one year per grant); renewable.
- Insurance
- Required. Health insurance valid in B&H for the intended stay must be shown; note that holding a B&H work permit is treated as satisfying the means-of-subsistence and health-insurance conditions.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals employed by a B&H employer. Requires two approvals: an employer-sponsored work permit plus a temporary residence permit for work.
- Requirement
- Employer obtains the work permit from the Employment Service; employee then applies to the Service for Foreigners' Affairs (SPS) with signed employment contract, proof of qualifications, accommodation and residence registration.
- Study
Temporary residence permit – study
Up to 1 year, renewable for the duration of studies.
- Insurance
- Required. Proof of health insurance valid in B&H is a standard temporary-residence requirement; also a medical attestation (issued within ~3 months) that you carry no disease threatening public health.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals enrolled at a recognised B&H educational institution (university or other accredited program).
- Requirement
- Enrolment/admission confirmation from the institution, financial guarantee/proof of sufficient funds, proof of accommodation, clean criminal record and a long-stay (D) visa where the nationality requires one.

Long-stay visa (Type D)
Issued for stays exceeding 90 days, typically valid 6 to 12 months, allowing a residence-permit application after arrival.
- Insurance
- Required. Health insurance valid in Bosnia & Herzegovina for the intended stay is part of the documentation for the long-stay/residence route.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals intending to stay over 90 days for work, study or immigration; it is the entry gateway before applying for a temporary residence permit inside B&H.
- Requirement
- Applied at a B&H embassy/consulate; supporting documents depend on purpose (e.g. an approved work permit for employment, or enrolment confirmation for study), plus passport, funds and accommodation proof.

Temporary residence – family, real estate or other grounds
Up to 1 year per grant, renewable.
- Insurance
- Required. Health insurance valid in B&H plus a recent medical attestation are standard conditions for all temporary-residence grounds.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals with another lawful basis: marriage/partnership with a B&H citizen, family reunification, real-estate ownership, medical treatment, or roughly 23 specialised 'work without permit' categories (founders, professors, artists, athletes, doctors, etc.). Often used by remote workers/long-stayers via a company (DOO) or sole-proprietor (obrt) registration.
- Requirement
- Documents proving the specific basis (marriage/family ties, property deed, company registration, etc.), plus passport, proof of funds, accommodation and clean criminal record.
- Residence
Permanent residence permit
Indefinite (permanent), subject to absence limits.
- Insurance
- Required. Confirmation of health insurance is an explicit condition for granting permanent residence.
- Good for
- Long-term foreign residents seeking indefinite settlement in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
- Requirement
- At least 5 years of continuous temporary residence (allowed absences max ~10 months total or 6 months at once), sufficient regular funds, adequate accommodation, basic knowledge of an official language/alphabet, and a clean criminal record. Administrative fee around 200 BAM.
- Transit
Airport transit visa (Type A)
Transit only; does not permit leaving the airport / entering B&H territory.
- Insurance
- OptionalNot required for airport transit (no entry into the country), though travel insurance is generally advisable.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals (from visa-required countries) changing flights at a B&H airport en route to a third country, without leaving the international transit zone.
- Requirement
- Onward ticket and valid entry documents for the final destination; passport valid 3+ months. Many nationalities are exempt from airport transit visas.
