Visa types & longer-stay routes for Russia

Rules are written for third-country foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Russia (e.g. EU, UK, US, and most non-CIS citizens); CIS and a handful of visa-exempt nationalities follow separate, more relaxed rules. Note: since 30 June 2025 most foreign visitors must also complete biometric registration (fingerprints + facial image, via the ruID/Russia ID app) on entry under an experiment running to 30 June 2026 - verify current status before travel.

    Unified Electronic Visa (e-visa)

    Up to 30 days per entry; visa valid 120 days from issue, single entry only

    Insurance
    Requiredholders must carry medical insurance valid in the Russian Federation for the entire stay (limited reciprocal-agreement exceptions); it must be in place before entry and cannot be bought on arrival.
    Good for
    Citizens of ~64 eligible countries (incl. most EU states, China, India, Japan, Turkey, Mexico) visiting for tourism, private/guest visits, business or humanitarian/cultural events; NOT available to UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand nationals.
    Requirement
    Online application via the official e-visa portal (evisa.kdmid.ru); no invitation letter or document confirming purpose required; entry only via approved checkpoints. Consular fee approx USD 52 (payment routed via platforms accepting CNY/AED).

    Tourist Visa (consular sticker)

    Up to 30 days per trip; single or double entry (US citizens may obtain multi-year multi-entry tourist visas)

    Insurance
    Requiredtravel health insurance valid in Russia for the entire period of stay must be presented (commonly min. EUR 30,000 coverage).
    Good for
    Visa-required foreign nationals (incl. UK and US citizens) travelling for tourism who are not eligible for, or need longer/multi-entry beyond, the e-visa.
    Requirement
    Tourist confirmation/invitation from a Russian tour operator listed in the federal register; biometric fingerprinting; passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages.
  • Business

    Business Visa

    Up to 90 days per stay (max 90 days in any 180-day period); single/double entry, or multiple-entry valid 1 year (5 years possible in some cases, verify)

    Insurance
    Requiredtravel/medical insurance valid in Russia for the period of stay is generally required; verify current rule for your nationality.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals attending meetings, conferences, negotiations or commercial activities in Russia (no local employment).
    Requirement
    Official business invitation from a Russian host organisation (or, depending on case, GUVM/MFA telex); biometric fingerprinting.
  • Work

    Work Visa (incl. Highly Qualified Specialist / HQS)

    Ordinary work permit/visa typically up to 1 year; HQS up to 3 years, renewable, tied to the employment contract

    Insurance
    Requireda medical insurance contract (or employer-arranged coverage) valid in Russia is mandatory for the worker and accompanying family for the contract duration.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals with a job offer from a Russian employer; the HQS track is for higher-salaried specialists with simplified processing.
    Requirement
    Employer-sponsored work permit and invitation; HQS requires a salary above the legal threshold (750,000 RUB per quarter / 250,000 RUB per month; a lowered ~83,500 RUB per month applies to accredited-IT, science and academic specialists); negative HIV and medical certificates.

    Student Visa

    Issued for ~90 days initially, then extended in-country to a multi-entry visa for the duration of studies

    Insurance
    Requiredproof of health insurance valid in Russia (coverage commonly cited around EUR 30,000); some universities arrange coverage on enrolment. Verify amount.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals enrolled in an accredited Russian university or educational institution (degree, preparatory or exchange programmes).
    Requirement
    Official invitation from a Ministry-accredited Russian institution; negative HIV certificate (issued within ~3 months/90 days); documents translated and notarised into Russian.
  • Residence

    Temporary Residence Permit (RVP/TRP) and 'Shared Values' route

    TRP valid up to 3 years; step toward permanent residence and citizenship

    Insurance
    Requiredat entry - applicants must hold Russian-valid medical insurance (Schengen-country applicants commonly min. EUR 30,000) for the initial private visa; once resident, coverage is via the OMS/DMS system. Confirm current requirement when applying.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals seeking to live (and usually work) in Russia long-term; quota-exempt categories include spouses of Russian citizens, native Russian speakers, and applicants under the 'shared/traditional values' decree (Presidential Decree No. 702, Aug 2024).
    Requirement
    Quota allocation (2026 nationwide quota approx 3,802 permits, down ~30% on 2025) unless exempt; medical certificates, criminal-record check and (for quota applicants) Russian language/history exams. 'Shared values' applicants enter on a single-entry private visa (up to ~90 days) to obtain a quota-free, exam-free TRP. State fee approx 1,920 RUB.
  • Residence

    Permanent Residence Permit (vid na zhitelstvo)

    Indefinite (no longer 5-year renewals for most categories; physical booklet replaced at set ages)

    Insurance
    Recommendedpermanent residents access the Russian medical system (OMS/DMS), but maintaining valid health coverage is advisable; verify current obligations.
    Good for
    Foreign nationals already holding a TRP (or in an exempt category) who intend to settle permanently in Russia.
    Requirement
    Generally requires prior residence on a TRP (apply from ~8 months in, no later than 4 months before TRP expiry); income proof, medical certificates and language/history exams unless exempt. State fee approx 6,000 RUB.
  • Transit

    Transit Visa

    Up to 3 days by air; up to 10 days by road/rail (calculated by route, distance / 500 km)

    Insurance
    Requireda health insurance policy valid in Russia for the entire transit period is generally requested for transit visa applications.
    Good for
    Visa-required foreign nationals passing through Russia en route to a third country (where the stay exceeds the visa-free airport-transit allowance).
    Requirement
    Confirmed onward air/train ticket or route documentation and (where required) a visa for the destination country; passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages.
