Visa types & longer-stay routes for Cambodia

Rules are written for general foreign (non-Khmer) nationals. Most non-ASEAN passport holders need a visa (e-Visa, visa on arrival, or embassy), while citizens of ASEAN member states get visa-free short stays of 7-30 days depending on nationality, and people of Khmer descent use the separate K-class visa.

  • Most nomadsTourist

    Tourist Visa (Type T)

30 days, single entry; extension options are very limited - travellers wanting a longer stay use the Ordinary (E) visa instead.

    Insurance
Recommendednot required - Cambodia does not mandate travel or medical cover for entry, but private cover is advised as medical facilities outside Phnom Penh are limited.
    Good for
Leisure travellers and short visits; available as e-Visa (evisa.gov.kh), visa on arrival, or at an embassy.
    Requirement
Passport valid 6+ months with 1 blank page, passport photo, ~USD 30 government fee (often ~USD 36 incl. processing via the official portal); separate free e-Arrival card required for air arrivals (submit within 7 days before arrival).
  • Most nomadsBusiness

Ordinary / Business Visa (Type E)

30 days on entry, then extendable inside Cambodia for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the sub-class.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required - no health insurance mandated; private cover recommended for longer stays.
    Good for
Foreigners planning a longer stay for work, business, study, retirement or job-seeking; the base visa that converts into EB/EG/ER/ES extensions. Also the de facto route for remote workers, as Cambodia has no dedicated digital-nomad visa.
    Requirement
Passport valid 6+ months, photo, ~USD 35 fee; the E visa alone does not grant the right to work - that requires a sub-class extension plus, for local employment, a work permit.
  • Most nomadsWork

    Business / Employment Extension (EB)

    1, 3, 6 or 12 months; the 12-month extension is renewable annually.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required - no statutory health-insurance requirement; private/expat cover strongly recommended.
    Good for
Foreigners employed by, investing in, or running a Cambodian business; the main long-term work route.
    Requirement
Employment letter / company documents; legal employment additionally requires a work permit and employment card from the Ministry of Labour (MLVT). Note: 2026 enforcement of work-permit rules is tightening, including for foreign-paid remote workers.
  • Work

    Job-Seeker Extension (EG)

1, 3 or 6 months; intended as a bridge - convert to an EB extension once employed.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required - no health-insurance requirement; private cover recommended.
    Good for
Foreigners in Cambodia looking for employment before they hold a contract.
    Requirement
Statement that you are seeking work; convert to an EB extension once you hold an employment contract.
  • Work

    Official / Diplomatic / Courtesy Visa (Types B / A / C)

Typically 30 days on issue, extendable per posting.

    Insurance
OptionalNot required - covered under official postings; not relevant to private travellers.
    Good for
Diplomats, government officials, and staff/volunteers of international organisations or NGOs invited by or in agreement with the Cambodian government.
    Requirement
Official/diplomatic passport or an official letter from the relevant ministry/organisation; usually issued free of charge.
  • Study

    Student Extension (ES)

Extensions of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, renewable while the course continues.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required by immigration - individual institutions may ask for cover; private health insurance recommended.
    Good for
Foreigners enrolled at a Cambodian school or university.
    Requirement
Letter of acceptance / enrolment from the institution, passport valid 6+ months, photos.
  • Residence

    Retirement Extension (ER)

Up to 12 months, renewable annually; a 12-month extension costs roughly USD 300.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required - no mandatory health insurance for the retirement extension; private medical cover strongly recommended given age.
    Good for
Genuinely retired foreigners aged 55+ who do not work or run a business in Cambodia.
    Requirement
Age 55+ and proof of retirement / means of support. There is no fixed statutory minimum, but law-firm and agent sources cite a benchmark of ~USD 1,500/month income or equivalent savings (a pension or social-security letter or bank statements) - figures vary by office, verify.
  • Residence

Cambodia My Second Home (CM2H) Golden Visa

10-year renewable residence visa; no minimum-stay requirement, with citizenship eligibility after ~5 years of residency.

    Insurance
RecommendedNot required by law - membership typically includes 1 year of complimentary medical insurance, but no insurance is mandated; ongoing private cover recommended.
    Good for
Investors wanting a 10-year renewable residence visa (with an eventual citizenship path) via qualifying investment, usually in approved real estate.
    Requirement
Qualifying investment - the 2026 structure is commonly cited as ~USD 100,000 in government-approved real estate plus a one-off membership fee of ~USD 50,000 (some approved projects quote a USD 50,000 minimum). Spouse can be included. Verify the current threshold with the Ministry of Interior / programme operator.

General guidance only; visa rules and fees change and are applied at the discretion of Cambodian immigration - verify with the official portal (evisa.gov.kh) or a Cambodian embassy before travel. Last checked: 2026-06.

Visa-free isn’t insurance-free

Whatever route you take into Cambodia, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.
