Jamaica visa options for United Kingdom passport holders
Tourist / short stay
Visa-free
Enter without a visa, usually for a set number of days.
Visa types & longer-stay routes for Jamaica
Rules are written for foreign (non-Jamaican) nationals; visa-free entry applies to roughly 100+ nationalities (incl. US, UK, Canada, EU), while about 50 nationalities must obtain a visa before arrival, and CARICOM skilled nationals follow separate free-movement rules.
- Most nomadsTourist
Visa-Free Tourist Entry (90 days)
Up to 90 days; extensions of stay can be requested from PICA before the stamped date expires.
- Insurance
- RecommendedNot required for entry, but strongly recommended — Jamaica has below-average medical facilities and no reciprocal health cover for visitors. (A separate 'Jamaica Cares' mandatory traveller protection fee has been discussed but verify current status before travel.)
- Good for
- Holidaymakers and short-stay visitors from the roughly 100+ visa-exempt nationalities (e.g. US, UK, Canada, EU).
- Requirement
- Valid passport, proof of onward/return travel and sufficient funds; all travellers must complete the online C5 / PICA immigration form (within ~72 hours before arrival). Nationals from the ~50 visa-required countries must obtain an entry visa from a Jamaican embassy/consulate first.
- Business
Business Visitor (short-term, up to 30 days)
Up to 30 days without a business visa (for visa-exempt nationals); a business visa is required for business stays exceeding 30 days, and visa-required nationals always need one.
- Insurance
- RecommendedNot an entry requirement; private travel/medical insurance recommended.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals attending meetings, negotiations or short business activities not exceeding 30 days.
- Requirement
- Valid passport, onward ticket and proof of funds; for stays over 30 days or visa-required nationalities, apply for a business visa at a Jamaican embassy/consulate. This route does not authorise local employment.
- Work
Work Permit (employer-sponsored)
Typically issued for up to 3 years per role/contract (often granted 1 year at a time and renewable up to the cumulative cap); verify current terms.
- Insurance
- RecommendedNot specified as a permit condition; private health insurance strongly recommended as foreign workers are not automatically covered by public health services.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals taking up employment in Jamaica with a local employer or contractor; required for both Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth citizens.
- Requirement
- Employer/contractor (or JAMPRO for investors) applies to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, demonstrating the role cannot readily be filled by a Jamaican; applicant provides passport, qualifications and references. CARICOM nationals with a Certificate of Recognition of CARICOM Skills Qualification are exempt from a work permit.
- Study
Student Entry / Study Status
Granted for the duration of the programme of study (or to passport expiry, whichever is first); visitors converting to student status receive a 12-month visa, renewable.
- Insurance
- RecommendedNot stated as a government entry condition; private/student health insurance recommended (some institutions may require it — confirm with the school).
- Good for
- Foreign nationals enrolled at a Jamaican educational institution registered with the Ministry of Education.
- Requirement
- Apply for an entry visa via a Jamaican embassy/consulate (where required) with a school acceptance/enrolment letter, valid passport, return ticket and proof of funds; register with PICA within 2 weeks of arrival to have the endorsement placed in the passport.
- Residence
Permanent Residence
Indefinite — allows living and working in Jamaica without further work-permit or stay restrictions once approved.
- Insurance
- RecommendedNot stated as a documentary requirement; private health insurance recommended for residents not covered by an employer scheme.
- Good for
- Foreign nationals seeking to settle long-term via: employment (after working in Jamaica 3+ years), retirement, marriage to a Jamaican, or as a dependent of a permanent resident.
- Requirement
- Application to PICA with a passport valid 6+ months, evidence of financial means/support (e.g. pension particulars, bank statements), a letter of motivation to the CEO of PICA, and two reference letters from Jamaican nationals; applicants are interviewed and processing takes about 3–6 months.
- Transit
Airside Transit
Short connection only — remaining within the international transit zone; no formal immigration entry occurs.
- Insurance
- OptionalNot required for airside transit.
- Good for
- Travellers (including visa-required nationals) connecting through Jamaican airports without formally entering the country.
- Requirement
- Valid travel documents, a confirmed onward ticket and compliance with the connecting carrier's requirements; passengers staying airside generally avoid the need for a Jamaican visa. Verify with the airline, as transit handling varies.
General guidance only; exact rules depend on your nationality, purpose and length of stay — always verify with PICA (pica.gov.jm), the Ministry of Labour, or a Jamaican embassy/consulate before travelling. Last checked: 2026-06.

Visa-free isn’t insurance-free
Whatever route you take into Jamaica, your entry stamp never includes health cover. Many longer-stay visas also require proof of insurance before they’re granted. That part is on you — and it’s what we actually do.

Visa rules can change at short notice and depend on your purpose of travel, length of stay and onward tickets. Always confirm with the destination’s embassy or the IATA Travel Centre before you book. Visa-free entry never includes travel health insurance. That’s still on you.
