Rules are written for non-Kosovar foreign nationals; entry conditions vary sharply by nationality, with EU/EEA, US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, New Zealand and many other passport holders entering visa-free while others must obtain a visa first.

  • Most nomadsTourist

    Visa-free short stay (tourist/business)

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period for most visa-exempt nationals; only 15 days for those entering on the strength of a Schengen visa/permit.

    Insurance
Recommended. No visa-stage insurance check for visa-free entrants, but travel health cover is strongly advised as Kosovo is outside the EHIC/Schengen system.
    Good for
Nationals of visa-exempt countries (incl. all EU/EEA, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and 90+ others) visiting for tourism, family or business; also holders of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa or Schengen-state biometric residence permit.

Valid passport and proof of purpose; no advance visa required. Exact entitlement depends entirely on nationality (verify).
  • Tourist

  • Work

Temporary residence permit - employment (with work permit)

    Insurance
Required. Valid (travel) health insurance is among the standard documents for the residence-permit application.

    Requirement
Employment contract with a registered Kosovo employer, employer-sponsored work permit, valid passport, police clearance and proof of financial means; processing roughly 1-3 months (verify).
  • Study

    Temporary residence permit - study

Tied to the academic programme; issued as a temporary permit of up to 12 months, renewable for the course duration.

    Insurance
Required. Valid health insurance covering the stay is part of the standard residence-permit documentation.
    Good for
Foreign students enrolled at a Kosovo higher-education institution, plus pupils and accompanying academics/researchers.
    Requirement
University enrolment/admission letter, valid passport, proof of financial means and accommodation, and academic records (verify current document list).
  • Residence

    Type D long-stay visa

Issued for stays longer than 3 months; bridges to a temporary residence permit on arrival.

    Good for
Foreign nationals intending to stay more than 90 days for work, study, research, family or medical treatment; it is the entry route used before applying for a residence permit.
    Requirement
Type C documents plus purpose-specific evidence (job contract, university enrolment, family link, etc.); application fee approx. EUR 80, with some exemptions (e.g. children under 6, students) (verify).
  • Residence

Temporary residence permit - family reunification

Up to 12 months, renewable; counts toward the 5-year track to permanent residence.

Spouses, minor children and certain dependants of Kosovo citizens or of foreigners holding a Kosovo residence permit.

    Requirement
Five years of continuous temporary residence in Kosovo (shorter, e.g. 3 years, for spouses of Kosovo citizens or permanent residents); absences of 6-10 months do not break continuity (verify).

Indicative summary compiled from official and reputable immigration sources; rules, fees and insurance thresholds change and depend on nationality, so verify with a Kosovo embassy/consulate or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travel. Last checked: 2026-06.
